As I write this
newsletter we are sailing across the Atlantic Sea, half way between
Portugal and Florida. We have been at sea 9 days now. The weather is
beautiful and the temperature 21 degrees centigrade.
Not
only are we having a great time, but it's inspirational and highly
motivating. Maurie and I are part of a group of 160 clients of Andrew
and Daryl Grant, Paul and Mark Blackman and Joanna Martin on their
Ultimate Seminar Cruise. There are actually another 3,500 people on the
boat. Our primary motivation for taking this cruise was to be with
these people in this informal learning environment.
I
remember reading sometime ago that our lives will be most significantly
affected by the five people with whom we spend most time. We will share
their values, their aspirations and motivations and their life-style.
If we don't, then we will be experiencing internal conflict because we
will not be being true to ourselves by being with them.
What
I've learnt on this trip is that if you have dreams, visions, yearnings
and longings then you have to surround yourself with people who have
them also. If you want to make that happen you need to surround
yourself with people who are action people.
The
seminars on this cruise are all directed towards addressing the
blockages we all have that stop us from reaching our potential.
Sometimes those blockages come from our family and upbringing - the
messages we were given growing up. For example, "You can do anything
you set your mind to, but don't achieve too much because those who rise
high can also fall hard."
Sometimes they comes from teachers in our schooling years - "You will never amount to anything."
Sometimes they are related to our gender, race, religion, colour or age.
Unless
we first identify these blockages and then secondly, decide that we are
going to remove them, then we never ever become who we are capable of
becoming.
It's
not surprising that so many of us fear breaking through these barriers
because it is risky business. It often means making huge changes in our
lives. But with risk comes opportunity and opportunity is a very
powerful force for change.
Career Transition.
One
of the risks that people I work with often need to take is to move
jobs. They need to move from a secure, comfortable, well-paid job, but
one that has lost its challenge and in which they are disillusioned, to
one that is challenging and exciting but offers no certainty of
security or success. They have to break through those fears - the risk
and uncertainty, the insecurity.
Recently
a colleague of mine (I'll call her Dianna) took that plunge. I met
Dianna about 18 months ago. She told me how dissatisfied she was in her
job and how undervalued she felt. Every time we met since, the
conversation continued with me giving her much encouragement to break
free. Six weeks ago she contacted me to say she had resigned and was
going to take a new position in an entirely different area.
Far
from being fearful, she was full of excitement. In fact what Dianna did
was produce an invitation inviting people to a celebration of her new
career - and her new life! It was a beautiful professional photo of
her, superimposed on a black background with the wording of the
invitation, date, time and venue (her new place of work) printed in
white font. How could she not be successful with this new career!
