Newsletter November 23, 2009 Thinking Forward to 2010 |

The year is fast coming to an end. We all begin to reflect on what the past year has brought. How successful have we been at achieving our goals? What do we want to improve on in 2010? We are planning big changes here at People Empowered in this new year. They are changes we want to make to be able to provide a better service to you the people who join our People Empowered community. I often wonder what you want when you join our mailing list. What are you looking for? That's what I want to give you. I take guesses. Sometime people let me know I am right. It's been helpful. Other times there is a deafening silence. I wonder if that means I've missed the mark. So I've decided not to guess anymore. I've created a survey to get your thoughts and ideas. It is completely anonymous and it does not take very long to complete - only a few minutes. At People Empowered we want to make your 2010 your best year ever. Help us to do that by completing our survey. I also want to share with you some thoughts I gained from a great article I read - or should I say re-read - during the week. It was called "Manage Your Energy, Not Your Time" and it fits very well with the discussion that we had last time on Work/Life Balance. It's where I am going to focus myself in 2010. I am not going to slow down. I am going to continue to negotiate work/life balance on a daily basis, but I'm going to make a significant commitment to managing - and creating - the energy I need to do what I want to do and achieve what I want to achieve. I hope you'll see this as valuable as I do and want to join me.

Manage Your Energy, Not Your Time. The title of this article by Tony Schwartz captured my attention and imagination, even before I read it. The Harvard Business Review is, without doubt, one of the most prestigious business journals in the world. What never ceases to amaze me, however, is how full it is of articles that are very useful and helpful even to small business owners and middle managers and leaders. To effectively reenergise their workforces, organisations need to shift their emphasis from getting more out of people to investing more in them, so they are motivated - and able - to bring more of themselves to work every day. To recharge themselves, individuals need to recognise the costs of energy-depleting behaviours and then take responsibility for changing them, regardless of the circumstances they're facing. http://hbr.harvardbusiness.org/2007/10/manage-your-energy-not-your-time/ar/1

What's Most Important in Your Life is made of Glass. Brian Dyson, when he was CEO of Coco Cola Enterprises, said: "Imagine life as a game in which you are juggling 5 balls in the air. You name them WORK, FAMILY, HEALTH, FRIENDS and SPIRIT and you are trying to keep them all in the air. You will soon understand that work is a rubber ball. If you drop it, it will bounce back up. But the other 4 balls - FAMILY, HEALTH, FRIENDS and SPIRIT - are made of glass."

Travelling Overseas As you read this, my partner and I will be boarding a cruise ship in Southampton in England to journey across the Atlantic. We are spending a month out of Australia, the first time since I went on a travelling study scholarship when I was 22. For those who don't really know me, that was a while ago. The main inspiration for the trip is a 13 day seminar cruise across the Atlantic from Southampton in England to Fort Lauderdale in Florida. Following the first 6 days, where we stopover at 4 ports in Europe, there will be seminars for on at least 5 of the days. Part of my commitment to 2010 was to get a mentor for myself. I have realised that I need someone to walk the journey with me because it is just too difficult to walk it alone in this fast-moving world in which we live today. And why would we want to walk it alone anyway when there are so many fantastic people out there with so much to share and so much to give. I joined a Mastermind group with 13 other people and this trip is part of the package. To share 13 days with these people (and those who have been part of this group in recent years) will be both exciting and a privilege. I have come to believe, especially in the last few years, that who we are and what we become is strongly influenced by who we spend our time with. Life is short and I've decided I want to spend my time with inspirational people who are positive, proactive, goal-oriented and who are committed to growing and developing together with others. We have spent 5 days in London doing the tourist thing before boarding the cruise ship. At the other end, we spend 5 days in Chicago with a couple who have contributed much to my career by generating work, but especially with inspiration and support. They are currently engaging a global appointment there. So I'm hoping to stay in touch over the next month, but if you don't hear from me, you'll know the reason why. |
